This standard applies to the physical and chemical limits of re-refined base oils derived from various refining processes when recycling used oils to produce base oils for lubricants. Re-refining may include distillation, hydrotreating, and/or treatments employing acid, caustic, solvent, clay and/or other chemicals. (See also ASTM D 4175)
This standard applies only to base oils and not to formulated products.
Re-refined base oils to this standard are intended for use either alone or in combination with virgin base oils to formulate products including automotive and industrial lubricants.
The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous.
